Current Emergency Medicine Projects at MTC
MTC Emergency Care Unit (ECU) Developement
Consulting on the Mae Tao Clinic's Emergency Care Unit (ECU) development. In July 2023 the MTC team embarked on a three-year project to develop a comprehensive ECU. This is a large project that is building an emergency department from the ground up.
The ECU development plan highlights four key areas: processes, infrastructure, knowledge/skills, and staffing. During my time at MTC, we will work together on a combination of educational training programs, ECU formulary, triage system implementation, treatment guidelines/protocols, ultrasound training, and design/layout of the ECU physical space to advance the ECU goals.

The ECU is planned to open in July 2024.
ECU Training Curriculum
(Based on WHO Basic Emergency Care (BEC) Course)
Developed by WHO and ICRC, in collaboration with the International Federation for Emergency Medicine, Basic Emergency Care (BEC): Approach to the acutely ill and injured is an open-access training course for frontline healthcare providers who manage acute illness and injury with limited resources.

Through collaboration with the MTC ECU working group and clinical team we are modifying the WHO BEC to better fit the unique clinical context of the MTC ECU. This includes removing skills already mastered by MTC staff such as IV cannulation, while adding additional topics and skills such as BLS and advanced medication discussions.
We have also modified the BEC TOT course to fast track a group of skilled Burmese Physicians to be able to teach the BEC course in a Burmese/English Hybrid. Certain course materials will also be translated to burmese.

The course will finish with newly designed team based simulated cases based on pathology often seen at MTC.
Point-of-Care Ultrasound Curriculum
Collaborating with MTC IPD team to perform and review ultrasounds. Developing linkage with Brown University Emergency Medicine and UT San Antonio Ultrasound divisions for image review and discussions about future joint projects and training.
Resuscitation Room Design
Design of resuscitation room for managing patients arriving with emergent medical conditions or traumatic injuries.
